Simulation Is a Relationship
A universe does not look simulated in isolation.
It may have discrete laws, finite information, strange constants, or unusually simple mathematics. None of those properties establishes that another system implements it. A simulation exists only when there is a particular relationship between two processes.
This sounds like a definition. It changes the argument.
Five relationships that should not be collapsed
At least five ideas often hide inside the word simulation:
- Ancestry: one universe causally produces another.
- Containment: one universe exists inside a structure in another.
- Implementation: a process in one world realizes the dynamics of another.
- Design: an agent intentionally chooses some properties of a world.
- Control: an upstream agent can intervene after the world begins.
These implications do not run automatically. A universe born through a black hole might have a causal parent without being a computation, an experiment, or a designed environment.
Causal ancestry alone does not entail simulation.
A simulation may also be undesigned in its details, inaccessible to its operators, or allowed to evolve without intervention. Clear relationships let us ask which claim the evidence actually bears on.
“Base” is not a probability rule
Call a world base if it has no upstream implementation layer. That gives base reality ontological priority: it is earlier in the implementation relation.
It does not follow that observers in it receive more measure.
If one upstream civilization produces many persistent observer-histories, those histories do not become anthropically negligible merely because they are downstream. Conversely, if constructed histories are extraordinarily expensive or impossible to make conscious, base observers may dominate. Either conclusion must come from a prior, a consciousness theory, resource constraints, or a reproduction model—not from the word base.
This recovers the sharpest form of the original mystery:
If we are base, what is supposed to make being base probable?
Some ontologies may not contain a first implementation layer at all. There could be infinite causal descent, closed implementation relations, or mathematical structures without a privileged physical origin.
The existence of a unique base layer is itself a hypothesis, not a guaranteed boundary condition.
The host’s physics is not the child’s physics
Let theta_H describe the laws of a host world and theta_C the laws implemented in a child world. There is no requirement that:
theta_H = theta_C
A host optimized for abundant computation might implement a child with slow, expensive, or apparently computation-hostile physics because those laws serve the child’s purpose.
The physics we observe need not reveal the physics—or efficiency—of a possible host.
That blocks an easy but invalid inference: our universe does not need to look optimized for simulation in order to be simulated. The relevant efficiency belongs first to the implementation relationship between host and child.
Once simulation is treated this way, nested worlds are not a stack of mysterious ontological levels. They are a network of reproductive relationships. The next question is how observer measure moves through that network.
